Overcoming Barriers to Employment Summit 9/5

If you or someone you know are living with disabilities and are looking for work, we want to let you know about the 4th Annual Overcoming Barriers to Employment Summit For Job Seekers with Disabilities, Friday, September 5th from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm at Shoreline Community College.

The conference goal is to assist job seekers with disabilities as they navigate their road to employment. Attendees will have an opportunity to attend workshops led by experts in the field and connect with valuable community resources. Lunch provided.

• Job Search On The Internet
• Secrets To A Successful Interview
• Supported Employment
• Job Accommodations & Assistive Technology

The keynote speaker will be State House Representative Cyrus Habib of the 48th Legislative District

This event is a community partnership between Northshore Community Network, the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Shoreline Public Schools, City of Shoreline, Quick-Start Shoreline and Shoreline Community College.

Eastside Vitality Health Fair 2014 is coming up on Saturdays in September. Overlake Medical Center will have free health screenings at its medical clinics from 8am to 11am on the following days:

Saturday, Sept. 06 – Overlake Medical Clinic Kirkland
Saturday, Sept. 13 – Overlake Medical Clinic Issaquah
Saturday, Sept. 20 – Overlake Medical Clinic Redmond
Saturday, Sept. 27 – Overlake Medical Center Bellevue


Area residents are invited to come meet your neighborhood physicians and staff while receiving free: Cholesterol/Glucose screenings, Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood Pressure checks, Cardiac and Diabetes Risk Assessments, Consultations with Overlake physicians. The First Congressional District Career Fair is Monday, September 15th from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at UW Bothell campus, North Creek Events Center, 18115 Campus Way NE. A partnership between WorkSource, UW Bothell, and U.S. Congresswoman Suzan DelBene to serve employers and job seekers in King, Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom Counties. Opportunities this Week

This message is about upcoming job opportunities, events and career trainings in the Seattle area. 

Care Day is this Friday, August 15 from 10am - 4pm at Bothell High School. Care Day strives to connect people experiencing homelessness and poverty in our local community with the services and resources they need, in one place, on one day. Attendees will enjoy a hot meal and receive free health services, haircuts, legal assistance, and access to public benefits, counseling, and employment training.  ConnectUp will be there offering information on Community Voicemail, Resource Wire, free phone services and low-cost internet options.

On Friday, August 22nd from 11am – 1pm FamilyWorks Food Bank and Solid Ground offer a Baby Boost Fair. This free event is for parents on a limited income. Learn more about health and nutrition resources, connect with important parenting programs and social service agencies and get free items for infants and toddlers, including feeding and hygiene products. The event will be held at the Family Works Food Bank at 1501 N 45th Street, Seattle. 

WorkSource Renton is hosting a Mock Interview Session with Employer Guests on Tuesday, August 19 from 1pm-3pm at 500 SW 7th Street. PCL Construction and Smart Talent will conduct mini mock interviews with each person (10 minute timed interview and 5 minutes for feedback). Customers will give the employer their resumes and job titles they want to practice interviewing for ahead of the interviews. Essentially, we want applicants to be able to succinctly express why they're a good fit for a particular target job they're interested in. Having real employers helps replicate an interview situation and is an invaluable service for interview practice, employer feedback, and employer networking. Free School Supply Events

If you or someone you know have school age children and can’t afford to buy school supplies this year, many organizations offer free school supplies to families in need.

Here are some one-day free school supply events with no pre-registration necessary:

Atlantic Street Center is coordinating a Back to School Bash with the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition at the Plaza at the corner of Rainier and Henderson. This event focuses on serving families living in ZIP codes 98118, 98108 and 98178. The fair will be Saturday, Aug. 9, 11am-4pm at 2103 S Atlantic St, Seattle.

Auburn Youth Resources – Enumclaw Youth & Family Services coordinates a back-to-school fair each year with Plateau Outreach Ministries. Fair will be Aug. 22 from 9am-12pm at J.J. Smith Elementary School at 1640 Fell St, Enumclaw.

Center for Human Services helps coordinate a resource fair for the Northshore area at Maywood Hills Elementary. Event includes free school supplies, haircuts, free children’s ID cards, children’s activities and community resource information. Fair will be Aug. 13, 4pm-6:30pm at 19510 104th Ave NE, Bothell.

Eastridge Church coordinates a yearly school supplies event with free backpacks and kid activities as part of Delridge Days. The event will be Aug. 9 at 4500 39th Ave SW.

King County Fire District 20 provides new backpacks and school supplies during a fair Aug. 23, 10am-2pm at 12417 76th Ave S, Seattle. The event will include health screenings, food, games, safety information, prizes, races and a firefighter challenge.

Kirkland Teen Union Building, 348 Kirkland Ave, will have two events for middle and high school students. Thursday, Aug. 21, they will have hair stylists, barbers and makeup artists offering free services to local teens to help them get ready for the new school year. Also provides a “thrift shop” with racks of clothes. Friday, Aug. 22, teens can stop by and pick up school supplies including backpacks and calculators.

Lutheran Community Services Northwest – Angle Lake Family Resource Center coordinates a back-to-school backpack giveaway each year for SeaTac families with students who attend the Highline Schools District. Event also has food, games and prizes. Walk in Aug. 14, 10am-2pm at 4040 S. 188th St. Ste 100, SeaTac.

NWLife Church coordinates a back-to-school event with 2,000 backpacks, food and activities for children. Saturday Aug. 16, 11am at 13120 SE 192nd St, Renton. Arrive early.

Storehouse coordinates a yearly back-to-school event with school supplies, backpacks, haircuts and a resource fair for Covington residents only. Saturday Aug. 23, from 3pm-7pm at 26201 180th Ave SE, Covington, WA.

The YWCA is excited to offer two great programs to help you prepare for your career:

Office Works: Seattle Central College and the YWCA are offering a two-quarter training program in Office Administration. This course is fully funded for everyone and students who are eligible for public benefits will get extra support with transportation, career planning and intensive job search assistance. All students will learn skills in Microsoft Office, Information Technology, Customer Relations and Business Communications as well as job search strategies. The course prepares students for jobs in Records Management, Customer Relations, Human Resources Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Office Coordinator and more. The course begins this fall quarter on September 22 at the downtown YWCA. Classes are held Tuesday-Friday from 9am to 1pm. Medical Office Professional: South Seattle College is offering a free training in Medical Administration.  This is a 20 week intensive introduction to the personal and technical skills required for entry-level employment in Medical Business Information Technology/Office Administration.  This course includes a built in Externship within the medical field.
