The Downtown Seattle WorkSource Affiliate will be holding a hiring event for security officer positions. The High Point Branch of the Seattle Public Library will be holding a class on Craigslist Basics.  Attendees will learn techniques to help them find or sell items and search for housing and jobs. This class will be held on Sunday, May 25th from 1pm to 2:30pm at 3411 S.W. Raymond St,

The Downtown Seattle WorkSource Affiliate will be holding a Homeless Intervention Project (HIP) Orientation.  HIP is an employment and job training program that helps homeless individuals find and maintain full-time employment through job counseling, case management, and training. If you are homeless and motivated to work full-time, this orientation can assist with job searching, retention, training and education, work clothing, and tools.  This orientation will be held on Tuesday, May 27th from 10am to 11am at  2024 3rd Avenue, Seattle.  Registration is not required but it will be first come, first served.  For more information, call 206-436-8600.

Latina Health Fair: Saturday 5/17

If you or someone you know are seeking free health services and information, I want to let you know about the 12th Annual Latina Health Fair, this Saturday, May 17th from 10 to 2 at South Park Community Center.

Sea Mar Community Health Centers is hosting a health and resource fair on Saturday, May 17th at the South Park Community Center located at 8319 8th Ave S., Seattle, WA 98108.  The fair will take place inside the community center from 10am to 2pm.  The fair will offer a variety of free health screenings such as Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Dental, Diabetes, BMI, Infant & Child Developmental Screenings and HIV testing. Women will also have the opportunity to participate in health education consultations and visit the resource fair.

Come enjoy free food, health screenings, resource information, children’s activities and more!


And remember, receiving important screening tests and routine care is one step you can take to live a healthier life!

Job opportunities this week

First Step is a free one-quarter certificate program in Business Information Technology that can jumpstart your career as an office professional. This program is run collaboratively by YWCA, South Seattle College, and Seattle Jobs Initiative. Eligible graduates will receive job placement/retention and internship development assistance.  Eligible participants will be provided with tuition, books, and transportation assistance. The YWCA Career Pathways Program presents a free two quarter training in Medical Business Information Technology.  Students will learn valuable skills and gain 198 hours of internship experience during the 2nd quarter.  Course also includes resume and cover letter development, job readiness, and assistance with education and career planning.  Seattle residents who meet income eligibility will be provided with tuition and books assistance, job search and retention upon completion of program. DESC Connections is hosting a Career Fair that will include several local hiring programs. Bring your resume and be prepared to meet with company representatives. WorkSource will be holding an Apprenticeship Fair with 15 different participating programs focused on areas such as Building & Construction Trades, Electrical Trades, Manufacturing & Aerospace Trades, and many more.  You will have the opportunity to meet apprenticeship staff; tour apprenticeship programs; and learn about employers who are hiring apprentices from these programs.  This event will be held on May 21st from 12:30 to 3pm at South Seattle College Georgetown Campus which is located at 6737 Corson Avenue South, bldg. Fresh Bucks 2 for 1 at Farmers Markets

If you or someone you know could use help affording fresh fruits and vegetables this season, I want to let you know about the Fresh Bucks program, which provides matching funds for food stamp users buying fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets.  It supports people on food stamps getting fresh produce instead of packaged foods (which can be easier to access and cheaper, but less healthy) and stretches your food budget, while supporting local farmers. If you use SNAP, here's more info on how to use the program.

The Fresh Bucks program provides up to a $10 bonus match, for a minimum of $10 of EBT benefits redeemed, at participating Seattle-area Farmers Markets:
