Getting Your License Back 7/30/15

Many jobs require a valid driver’s license so having it suspended can be a major barrier to finding steady employment. Thankfully, there are a few resources available to people who are looking for a way to get their driver’s license back.

Northwest Justice Project offers assistance for people who have had their license suspended due to unpaid traffic fines, suspension due to a car accident when you were uninsured or leftover fines from driving with a suspended license even though the suspension period is over. To find out if you qualify for this program, call their hotline at 1-888-201-1014 from 9:15am to 12:15pm.

LELO, Legacy of Equality, Leadership and Organizing, also offers assistance with getting your license back. If you have your license suspended in the third degree, they can help you make a plan to get it back. Email martha@lelo.org to set up an intake appointment.

Hot Weather Tips 7/2/15

Seattle will be getting more hot weather over this holiday weekend. Here are some tips on how to stay safe and comfortable in the heat.

-Drink plenty of water. Beverages with alcohol, caffeine and/or lots of sugar can actually dehydrate you. Keep water with you whenever you are outside.
-Stay out of the direct sunlight from 11am-2pm. That is when the sun is strongest. If you can't avoid being outside, make sure to apply sunscreen and give yourself plenty of chances to rest.
-Do not leave children or pets alone in your vehicle for any length of time. The temperature can increase quickly and lead to heatstroke or other health problems.
-If you don't have air conditioning in your home, consider going to a library, mall or other public space with air conditioning.
-Check in with elderly neighbors and family members. Older folks are more susceptible to complications from the heat.
-Watch out for heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat stroke include:
  • An extremely high body temperature (above 103°F)
  • Red, hot, and dry skin
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Nausea, confusion and unconsciousness

If you see someone with signs of overheating, move the person to a cooler location, have them rest for a few minutes and then slowly drink a cool beverage. Get medical attention for them immediately if they do not feel better.

Check out King County Health Beat The Heat and CDC's Extreme Heat FAQs for more tips on staying safe this summer.
