Financial Tips 9/10/15

Solid Ground is home to many great programs that can help people create stability and prosperity. Judy Poston is our Financial Fitness Guru. She holds workshops and does one on one coaching to help people set and achieve their goals. Judy had a few tips that can make a big difference.

When you have spare change, throw it in a jar and don’t touch it!  When the jar is full, take the money to the bank and deposit into your savings account and immediately begin refilling the savings jar. If you have children, you can turn this into a fun-family challenge to see who can save the most change in a month’s time!  This will help to teach your children how to save money!

If you are a coffee drinker, you can spend big dollars at your favorite coffee shop. If you cut back on two lattes a month, you can save $10 a month or more and put this money into your savings account! That's more than $100 a year. It may seem small but having some money set aside can make surprise expenses or emergencies much less stressful.

If may surprise you to learn where all of your money goes. For one month, keep track of every purchase. This can give you a good idea of where you can cut back in order to give yourself more wiggle room.

You can connect with Judy by emailing financialfitness@solid-ground.org or calling 206-694-6864.

Eating Healthy On A Budget 9/3/15

Eating healthy meals can be a challenge even when you aren't on a strict budget. The folks from Cooking Matters at Solid Ground gave us some tips to help stretch your dollar and get the best quality food for you and your family.

-Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at the peak of freshness. This means that they retain the nutrients and flavor without the short shelf life of fresh fruits and veg. Canned or frozen produce is usually more affordable than fresh when outside peak growing season.

-Stock your pantry with a few staples to bulk up your meals and make them more nutritious. Try adding frozen spinach to your next pasta dish or canned beans to soup. These items add vitamins and minerals as well as fiber which helps you feel fuller for longer.

-Think of recipes as guidelines, not strict rules. You can substitute similar items that might be on sale or readily available at the food bank. For example, you can use rice instead of pasta or swap out different vegetables in many recipes. This will give you some variety as well as allow you to take advantage of the best deals.

-A bit of planning can save you a lot of time and money. Making and portioning out food ahead of time can save you from needing to buy expensive prepared food while you are out and about. It will give you more control over what you eat as well as save you a lot of money in the long run.
