Youth Community Resource Exchange

United Way and New Horizons Ministries are partnering to present the Youth Community Resource Exchange on Thursday, January 28. This event is dedicated to connecting youth and young adults ages 12 to 26 to the resources and services that they need while experiencing homelessness. 

Attendees of the Youth Community Resource Exchange will receive a meal and a care package as well as access to free dental and eye care, haircuts, resources to get a job or education as well as loads of fun stuff. Job Opportunities 11/17/15

The YWCA Career Pathways Program supports students pursuing a Medical Administrative Assistant certificate at South Seattle College or Seattle Vocational Institute. There will be a workshop at YWCA Career Center Greenbridge at 9720 8th Ave SW in Seattle to learn more about the training opportunities and how this program can open doors in a growing industry. The workshop will be on Thursday, November 19 from 10:30 to 11:30am. Free School Supply Events

If you or someone you know have school age children and can’t afford to buy school supplies this year, many organizations offer free school supplies to families in need.

Here are some one-day free school supply events with no pre-registration necessary:

Atlantic Street Center is coordinating a Back to School Bash with the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition at the Plaza at the corner of Rainier and Henderson. This event focuses on serving families living in ZIP codes 98118, 98108 and 98178. The fair will be Saturday, Aug. 9, 11am-4pm at 2103 S Atlantic St, Seattle.

Auburn Youth Resources – Enumclaw Youth & Family Services coordinates a back-to-school fair each year with Plateau Outreach Ministries. Fair will be Aug. 22 from 9am-12pm at J.J. Smith Elementary School at 1640 Fell St, Enumclaw.

Center for Human Services helps coordinate a resource fair for the Northshore area at Maywood Hills Elementary. Event includes free school supplies, haircuts, free children’s ID cards, children’s activities and community resource information. Fair will be Aug. 13, 4pm-6:30pm at 19510 104th Ave NE, Bothell.

Eastridge Church coordinates a yearly school supplies event with free backpacks and kid activities as part of Delridge Days. The event will be Aug. 9 at 4500 39th Ave SW.

King County Fire District 20 provides new backpacks and school supplies during a fair Aug. 23, 10am-2pm at 12417 76th Ave S, Seattle. The event will include health screenings, food, games, safety information, prizes, races and a firefighter challenge.

Kirkland Teen Union Building, 348 Kirkland Ave, will have two events for middle and high school students. Thursday, Aug. 21, they will have hair stylists, barbers and makeup artists offering free services to local teens to help them get ready for the new school year. Also provides a “thrift shop” with racks of clothes. Friday, Aug. 22, teens can stop by and pick up school supplies including backpacks and calculators.

Lutheran Community Services Northwest – Angle Lake Family Resource Center coordinates a back-to-school backpack giveaway each year for SeaTac families with students who attend the Highline Schools District. Event also has food, games and prizes. Walk in Aug. 14, 10am-2pm at 4040 S. 188th St. Ste 100, SeaTac.

NWLife Church coordinates a back-to-school event with 2,000 backpacks, food and activities for children. Saturday Aug. 16, 11am at 13120 SE 192nd St, Renton. Arrive early.

Storehouse coordinates a yearly back-to-school event with school supplies, backpacks, haircuts and a resource fair for Covington residents only. Saturday Aug. 23, from 3pm-7pm at 26201 180th Ave SE, Covington, WA.

Hi. If you or someone you know have kids in school and can’t afford to buy school supplies this year, there are many free back to school events where kids can get free school supplies. Last week I sent a message about back to school programs that require registration, the following are free school supply events with no registration necessary.

·                     This Saturday, Aug. 10, noon-4pm, Atlantic Street Center is coordinating a Back to School Bash with the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition at Beer Sheva Park, 8650 55th Ave S.

Free School Supplies Programs

Hi. If you or someone you know have school age children and can’t afford to buy school supplies this year, there are a number of free back to school events and programs where kids can get free school supplies.

The following programs require registration; There are also a number of one-day free school supply events with no registration required in mid August, which I will send out next week.

• Hopelink has free school supplies for children attending the Lake Washington, Riverview, Skykomish, Snoqualmie Valley, or Sultan School Districts. Register online here or complete a registration form at any Hopelink Center. Register by August 6^th.
•  Black Diamond Community Center coordinates a one-day event, providing area families with free backpacks and school supplies. Walk in to their main office 31605 3rd Ave. to fill out an application to register by Monday, Aug. 12.
• Center for Human Services helps coordinate a program for Shoreline School District students with free school supplies and clothes. Register by Aug. 13. Call (206) 362-7282.
•  Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank helps children in the Issaquah School District who need extra assistance. Fill out an application before July 31. Pick up date is Aug. 24. Call (425) 392-4123
• Maple Valley Food Bank & Emergency Services provides backpacks filled with school supplies to school-age children living in the city of Covington and the Tahoma School District. Pre-registration will be during food pantry hours from July 29 through Aug. 22 at 21415 Maple Valley Hwy.
• Salvation Army – East King provides school supplies to low-income children of families in East King County. Accepting applications through mid. August. Call (425) 452-7300.
• Salvation Army – Federal Way/ Des Moines offers limited school supplies for children in Federal Way School District and Des Moines, south of 216th. Apply after Aug. 10 call (253) 946-7933.
• Salvation Army – Kent provides school supplies to children in Kent, Auburn, Covington, Algona and Pacific. Call (253) 852-4983 in early August.

Youth Education, Career & Resource Fair - Fri 2/15

If you, your children, or someone you know are a youth between, ages 14 and 21 and live in Seattle, I want to let you know about the annual Youth Education, Career & Resource Fair this Friday, February 15th from 10 to 2 at the Rainier Community Center.

The Youth Education, Career & Resource Fair will feature workshops, hands-on learning experiences, and lunch will be provided. This is also a great opportunity for youth to connect with employers, college reps, and other community resources. The fair will feature over 60 vendors (including Community Voice Mail) and workshops that focus on resume writing, interviewing, and applying for schools and employment.

This year, many of the vendors will have hands-on/interactive displays to engage and encourage youth. Including: 
-A real airplane/jet engine brought by Boeing
-YouthCare’s YouthTech program will provide technology that participants can experience for themselves
-The Discovery Corps at the Pacific Science Center will be bringing real live Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches
All vendors will also have information about their programs and industries.

The fair is sponsored by Seattle Youth Employment Consortium (SYEC), Seattle Human Services Department's Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and Upward Bound program, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Sea Mar Community Health Centers, MetroCenter YMCA, and YouthCare.

The Schedule is:
9:45am-12:00pm: Youth orientations, every 20 minutes (encouraged for ALL participants to attend)
10:30am-11:30am: Morning workshops (60 second commercial, Seattle Education Access on college planning)
11:30 – 12pm: the main gym will be closed for vendors to eat lunch
11:30am – 12:30pm: Lunch for youth (Vietnamese sandwiches, chips, and a drink)
12:30pm – 1:30pm: Afternoon workshops
On-going until 1:30ish: Resume writing

There will be an on-going raffle as youth turn in their fair passports. Prizes include an iPod Shuffle, 2 $25 gift cards to Target, tickets to The Music Man, and others!

Working Connections Childcare

Do you or someone you know need help paying for childcare? There is a new opportunity for low-income folks in our communities that need assistance with child care called Working Connections Child Care Program. 

The Working Connections Child Care Program helps low income families pay for childcare expenses while their parents are working, looking for work, or in an approved training program.  This program is funded by state and federal funds, and is administered by DSHS.  There is also a separate pot of funding for seasonal or agricultural workers for this program. 

Here is the process for the parent:

1.  Select a licensed child care provider or if you don’t know anyone in your community, find one by calling WA State Child Care Aware at (800) 466-1114 or at childcarenet.org.

2. Have proof of income (3 months of paystubs, last year’s tax return, OR a letter from your employer stating wages and hours).

3. Fill out an application: online at washingtonconnection.org; by phone at  1 (877) 501-2233; or in person at any DSHS Community Service Organization.

4. Mail, fax or deliver your documents to DSHS.

5. Confirm receipt of documents

6. Be persistent by following-up every few days to make sure your application is moving through the process.

7. Wait for approval; it takes an average of 17 days.  If you are denied child care assistance and believe you have been wrongfully denied, there is an appeals process.

8. Once approved, the selected child care provider and the parent gets a notice and they can  begin the child care.

WA State has budgeted this child care subsidy for 33,500 families from July 1st, 2012 – July 2013.  Currently, 22,500 families are accessing this resource.  This means we have 11,500 slots to fill by this November; if we don’t, the legislature will surely cut the budget for this program. So please spread the word about Working Connections Childcare to your friends and family.

Summer Meals Program

Could your kids use more food this summer? The Summer Meals Program is one of the federal nutrition programs that provides free meals and snacks to children and teens during the summer months (June through August). Summer Meals, also known as Summer Sack Lunch, is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established in 1968 to respond to growing research that correlated a child’s nutrition with academic success and concerns about the lack of nutrition resources for children during the summer months. There are over 100 Summer meal sites in King County, located in schools, parks, recreation centers, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and camps. In addition to meals, many sites provide fun activities for kids. Sites may be open from June through August, depending on your community.

At the Youth Education, Career, and Resource Fair, you will have the opportunity to network with up to 70 employers, non-profit agencies, and 2-year and 4-year colleges. You can gain valuable information and skills by attending interactive workshops on a variety of educational and job-readiness topics such as resume writing, college access & post-secondary planning, and exploring career opportunities in skilled trades, video game design and the sciences. The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that guarantees rights and services for school-aged children who are homeless. Every school district has a local homeless liaison who can help your children enroll and can link them with services to help them succeed in school. You should be able to find contact information for the local homeless liaison in the school district staff directory or by asking at your local school. If you have trouble contacting your local liaison or if you want more information on the McKinney-Vento Act, please call the toll-free Helpline number for the National Center for Homeless Education at 800-308-2145. Youth Resource Outreach Fair 8/5/11

If you or someone you know is a youth ages 12 – 27 without a stable place to live you should know about the Youth Outreach Fair this Friday August 5th from noon to 3 at Cal Anderson Park. There will be Over 25 organizations there providing information and resources including:

• Hepatitis testing

• Transitional housing screening
• Case management sign-up
• Clothing
• Hygiene supplies

Choice Career Fair & W.A.G.E.S. Internship Program 5/18

Youth Employment Programs

Greetings. If you or someone you know is a youth and looking for work, I want to let you know about two job training programs starting soon, Year Up and Youth Garden Works.

Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships. During the first six months of the program, participants focus on skill mastery in one of two areas: 1) Desktop Support / IT Help Desk; 2) Investment Operations. Equal emphasis is placed on developing the professional skills required in today's workplace such as effective communication, leadership, and teamwork. During the second six months of the program, students are placed in internships with local partner companies. A stipend between $150 and $280 per week is provided to all participants throughout the one-year, full-time educational program. You must be between the ages of 18-24 and a High School graduate or GED recipient. The next program starts March 8th so apply now before it fills up. Seattle Youth Garden Works is an 8-12 week agriculture and enterprise job training program emphasizing innovation and responsibility. Youth grow, package, and sell produce at farmers markets and through local restaurants, participating in all aspects of the food system and gaining a range of employment skills. People from diverse backgrounds come together to grow food, and in the process develop personal connections to the food system. Graduates have opportunities to pursue internships with Seattle Tilth’s other programs and with partner organizations that build on the skills learned at SYGW. The program starts Tuesday, March 22nd and ends Friday, June 17. This job also includes participation in educational activities and job skills training. Pay is $8.67 per hour. For Youth Ages 12 - 24 without a stable place to live
At south Lake Union Armory 860 Terry Ave. N

Over 25 organizations will be providing information and resources including
- HIV testing and information
- STD information
- Hepatitis testing
- Free books and academic advising
- Transitional housing screening
- Case management sign-up
- Emergency contraception and pregnancy testing
- Flu shots
- Clothing
- Hygiene supplies
- Community voicemail
- Dept. of Licensing - info. on getting identification

Homeless Vets Stand Down 11/12

If you or someone you know are a homeless veteran, The Homeless Veterans Stand Down, is next Friday 11/12. Its a free event where homeless veterans can get free sleeping bags, hats, gloves, pants, boots, and services, including Community Voice Mail. It is next Friday the 12th starting at 8:30 AM. Items will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis and in the past, most items have been distributed by noon. The Homeless Veterans Stand Down is at Seattle Vet Center at 2030 9th Ave. in Seattle.
