Free Tenant Rights Workshop 7/24

Want to know more about your rights as a renter? Wondering how to get your deposit back or request a repair? Would you like to know how the new changes in the laws impact renters? SolidGround Tenant Counselors are hosting a FREE Rent Smart Workshop for the community next Thursday, July 24th from 4:30-6:30pm, at Bellevue City Hall.

At this tenant’s rights workshop, they will provide information about the landlord-tenant laws in Washington State and discuss the laws and ordinances that apply throughout the housing search process, move-in, during tenancy, move-out and eviction. Bring your questions!
Since there is no agency that enforces the Residential Landlord-Tenant Act in our state, it is largely up to tenants to understand the laws and know their rights in order to take appropriate action to effectively enforce them. They will talk about some tips and best practices for renters to help you assert your rights and have a successful tenancy – whether you are signing a rental agreement, requesting repairs or have questions about your privacy rights.

Especially with recent changes and additions to the laws, challenging situations can arise for tenants. There are remedies available to tenants if a landlord is not complying with the laws, but tenants have to know those remedies are available in order to use them. Knowing the laws and what steps to take, tenants can take action to correct the problem.

If you would to attend the workshop, please RSVP to the Solid Ground Tenant Services Workshop & Advocacy Line at 206.694.6748 or email tenantwa@solid-ground.org.

Thursday July 24th, 4:30- 6:30
pm
Bellevue City Hall
Room 1E-108

Tips for Staying Cool during Summer Heat

It’s summer and with that can come extreme heat. This weekend and next week highs in the 90's are forecast. Here are some tips for staying cool in warm weather.

First, although it can be tough, try to limit your time in the sun while it’s at its hottest, which is between 10am-4pm.  High temperatures can increase the likelihood of heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke. There are organizations around the country that provide temporary air-conditioned public spaces to help deal with the health effects of a heat wave. They are known as “cooling stations.” To find a cooling station in your area, call 2-1-1 . If your city does not have a designated cooling station set up, try spending as much time as possible in public air-conditioned places such as libraries, malls, community centers, and other public locations.

Second, dress simply in lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Shorts and short sleeves are good choices, although lightweight long-sleeve shirt and pants are actually better if you’re hiking or will be outdoors for any length of time since it provides more sun protection. Cotton clothing tends to keep you cool. Don’t forget your head! A wide-brimmed hat will provide shade. In extreme places, try a bandana folded in a triangle and wrapped over your head. It will keep the sweat away, while allowing your body to still release heat.  If you have long hear, wear it up and off your face and body.

Third, during this hot time it is important to pay attention to how your body is feeling. Signs and symptoms for a heat related illness can include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. During heat waves it is important to try and keep your body temperature low. Most important: Stay hydrated! Make sure you are getting plenty of water. Taking sips throughout the day and drinking before you become thirsty will help regulate your body temperature. Some drinks, such as coffee or other caffeinated beverages, and alcohol, actually cause dehydration, so you may want to limit or avoid those altogether during times of extreme heat. In addition to drinking water, try to find a spray bottle or squirt gun and use it to spritz yourself too.  Get in front of a fan if you can.

Finally, eat to stay cool. Food can keep you cool if you can get fresh salads, vegetables and fruit. They have a lot of water in them, while meat and protein-heavy foods actually can increase your body’s heat production which can add to loss of water. Avoid eating junk food which won’t give you the healthy energy you need to cope with the heat. Cold soups are great in warm weather. If you haven’t tried them yet, hot weather is the excuse you need!

Stay cool and don’t forget to wear sunscreen and sunglasses. While they don’t necessarily have a cooling effect, their protective effect is vital during warmer weather. Take care!

Financial Fitness Tip: How to Request your Free Credit Reports

Here is a financial tip from Solid Ground’s Financial Fitness Boot Camp. Solid Ground’s ConnectUp will be broadcasting financial fitness tips like this once a month from now on.

A credit report includes information on where you live, how you pay your bills, and whether you’ve been sued or have filed for bankruptcy.

Visit annualcreditreport.com to request your free annual credit reports from each of three agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. There are unique benefits to each agency but if you are not planning on a big purchase or loan you can stagger your requests to allow you to stay updated throughout the entire year.

To ensure you are getting free credit reports, be sure you use annualcreditreport.com.  There are many similar websites that claim to offer free credit reports; however, some ask for your credit or debit card information as well as private information that can used for fraudulent purposes.

After confirming your identity with a few questions you can look at your report online. If for some reason you cannot pull your free annual credit report, you can download their request form, fill it out, and mail the form to Annual Credit Request Form’s office; it takes approximately two-to-three weeks to receive your credit reports.

This will allow you to see any errors that you might need to dispute. If you find something wrong with your credit report, dispute it. Be on the lookout for loans or credit cards listed that you never opened, misspelled names, or collection items that were not updated. help.consumerfinance.gov/app/creditreporting/ask

Knowing your credit report inside and out is important! Your credit report can be used to evaluate your applications for credit, insurance, employment, or renting a place to live. Good credit is necessary if you plan to use credit to make major purchases like a car or a home or want to be able to take advantage of the convenience credit can provide.

Overwhelmed? We would like to invite you all to call Solid Ground’s Financial Fitness Boot Camp at either (206) 694- 6864 or e-mail us at: financialfitness@solid-ground.org and make an appointment to come and see one of our financial counselors.  They provide Credit Counseling to help you find out what’s in your credit report and what it all means, how to understand you credit score, how to improve your credit standing and how to develop credit for your future.
